                            Meeting Guru Nanak

Bhai Pheroo Mall worshipped a goddess named Vashno Devi (vYSno dyvI). Many people use to worship the goddess at Jawalamukhi, a place up in the Himalaya mountains. Once a year, Bhai Pheroo Mall used to lead people from his surrounding villages on a pilgrimage to see the goddess there.

Bhai Pheroo Mall passed away in 1526, but his son, Bhai Lehna continued the tradition of the pilgrimage. He would lead a group of worshippers to the goddesses temple every year.

Bhai Lehna did this for many years. One day, Bhai Lehna heard a strange voice. It was Bhai Jodh, a follower of Guru Nanak. Bhai Jodh was singing hymns from Guru Nanak’s Aasa Ki Vaar. Bhai Lehna was amazed by the hymns, his mind felt relaxed when he heard the hymns.

Bhai Lehna asked bhai Jodh what hymn he was singing. Bhai Jodh told him that it was written by Guru Nanak who is living in Kartarpur. From this day on, Bhai Lehna had a desire to meet Guru Nanak.

After some time, Bhai Lehna set out for his yearly pilgrimage. On the way, his group decided to stop at a village near Kartarpur. While his companions rested, Bhai Lehna decided to go to Kartarpur and meet Guru Nanak.

On the way, he met Guru Nanak, However, Bhai Lehna did not know that this was the Guru. He asked him, “Do you know where I can find Guru Nanak?”

Guru Nanak replied, “Follow me, I am also going there.”

Guru Nanak led the way by walking while Bhai Lehna followed on horseback. Soon they reached the town. Guru Nanak said, “Go tie your horse to the stake and then come back into this room.”

Bhai Lehna went and tied his horse and then came back towards the room. He met a servant who said, “The Guru is in this room. He is alone, you may go and meet him.”

Bhai Lehna was very excited. He entered the room, but was surprised at what he saw. The same man who had walked with him was sitting in the room. Bhai Lehna felt bad because while Guru Nanak was walking, he was riding on a horse.

Guru Nanak told him, “Don’s be upset, you did nothing wrong. I only did my duty, you have come here as a guest and it is my duty to serve my guests.”

They both started to talk. As Bhai Lehna listened to Guru Nanak, his heart filled with love for the Guru. Bhai Lehna told Guru Nanak that he was on his way to worship the goddess. Guru Nanak replied, “Why worship the goddess when you can worship that God who created the goddesses.”

Upon hearing this, Bhai Lehna decided to stop worshipping the goddess. He went back to his companions and told them that he was not going to continue with them on the journey.

The entire group was mad at him. They told him that it was a sin to start a pilgrimage and leave it part way through. They also said that he would have to suffer for this sin. Bhai Lehna said that he was prepared to suffer any pain that he may receive, but that he would not give up the true Guru.
