                            Serving Guru Nanak

Bhai Lehna stayed a few days in Kartarpur with Guru Nanak, but then decided to come home and update his family about his encounter with Guru Nanak.

He returned to Khadoor and told his wife, Bibi Kheivi about Guru Nanak. He told her that he is going to become the Guru’s follower. He did not stay in Khadoor very long, just a few days.

During these days he made his eldest son, Dasu in charge of the shop. He also had a brand new Chola (
colw) made for himself. Before going back to Kartarpur he decided to take something to give to Guru Nanak. He thought that the Guru offers langar (free kitchen) in his house and many people come and eat there. So he decided to take a bag of salt with him. The entire way back he carried this huge bag of salt on his head. His wife told him to get someone to take it for you, but Bhai Lehna refused, saying that it would not be true seva (service) if someone else carried it for him.

He reached Guru Nanak’s house and asked Mata Sulakhni (Guru Nanak’s wife) where Guru Nanak was. She said that he is working in the fields. Bhai Lehna handed over the bag of salt that he brought from his home and then decided to go meet Guru Nanak in the fields.

When Bhai Lehna reached the fields, he saw that Guru Nanak had collected three bundles of grass for his cows and buffaloes. The Guru wanted to take the bundles home, but nobody would carry them for him because they were wet and muddy. Even the Guru’s sons, Baba Sri Chand and Baba Lakhmi Das Ji refused to carry the bundles.

Bhai Lehna bowed to Guru Nanak and said, “Consider me your worker and let me carry these bundles for you.”

Even though the bundles were heavy, Bhai Lehna carried all three bundles at once. Mud started to drip and from the bundles and Bhai Lehna’s new suit was all ruined, but he did not complain. He considered it a seva (service).

When they reached Guru Nanak’s home, Mata Sulakhni saw that Bhai Lehna’s new suit was ruined. She asked her husband, “Is this any way to treat a guest. By making him do work. Look, all of his clothes are ruined.”

The Guru Said, “God has sent the right man to do the job.”

Guru Nanak was testing Bhai Lehna to see if he was truly capable of becoming the Guru. Bhai Lehna stayed in Kartarpur and served Guru Nanak with full love for many years.
